TELUS Health Solutions - exclusive distributor of interactive pillbox in Canada

DOmedic’s innovation makes taking medication easier for patients with chronic disease

Montréal, PQ, May 11, 2010 – TELUS Health Solutions and DOmedic are partnering to make it easier for people with chronic illnesses requiring complex medication schedules to take their medications properly, and on time.

TELUS is adding DOmedic’s DO-pill Sécur interactive pillbox to its Assyst Rx Pharmacy product portfolio which is already helping more than 80 per cent of Quebec pharmacies simplify their prescription dispensing. With this addition, a pharmacist will be able to send DOmedic’s interactive pillbox home with patients, and it will electronically alert them when it is time to take a specific medication. The pharmacist will be able to program the pillbox to transfer data about medication schedules to a central processing centre over TELUS’ networks, and have it send reports back to patients’ caregivers and the pharmacy so any missed medications or other problems can be immediately taken care of.

“With the number of senior citizens in Canada expected to double in the next 20 years, our country will experience a significant increase in the occurrence of chronic disease and the related financial and human costs,” said Paul Lepage, vice-president and general manager of Healthcare Delivery Solutions with TELUS. “The accurate and efficient distribution and taking of medications is critically important, if we are to ensure quality of life for our elders and contain healthcare costs. DO-pill Sécur interactive’s pillbox should be an important tool in that effort.”

“TELUS’ wireless network offers the most extended geographic coverage and the fastest transfer speed for this critical health information,” said Benoit Demers, president and general manager of DOmedic Inc. “Thus, it’s an ideal provider for the communication between DOmedic’s DO-Pill Sécur interactive electronic pillboxes, the processing center and care providers.”

The DO-pill Sécur interactive looks like a larger version of the plastic seven-day pillboxes used to organize medications for people with chronic conditions. It solves several issues faced with the traditional pillboxes and is particularly useful for patients requiring guidance in their medication regimen because of complexity or their tendency to forget.
